Walk-A-Thon 2014

The Gorrie Walk-A-Thon is quickly approaching and we would love for everyone to be registered online. Even if you have no plan of raising funds, the organizers will use the sign up info to order your child's FREE t-shirt. Without registering for our class team, your child will NOT received a t-shirt. Gorrie Cares Service Club Project

Gorrie School Community-

PS 114 in Rockaway Beach, NY was completely devastated by Hurricane Sandy on October 29, 2012. This Queens school is close to Principal Sandler's Heart... it is her childhood elementary school and is in a community similar to South Tampa. Many people in the community lost everything and are homeless. The school is now shut down due to storm damage and students are being sent elsewhere to learn. Winter is coming and the temperatures are already dropping. To a child, a cozy fleece hat and scarf will provide protection from winter weather and offer a sense of comfort.

WHAT IS GORRIE PLANNING TO DO?

Gorrie Cares Service Club plans to be in every classroom on November 15th to assist students as they make fleece hats and scarves that will be sent directly to Rockaway Beach school community. This activity will take 15 minutes and be part of a community service unit for the Great American Teach- In. We hope to send over 500 hats and scarves!

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

• Wear your hat on Thursday November 15th and bring $1 OR MORE to donate to PS 114. Give money to your homeroom teacher.
• Send in monetary donations for PS 114. Label the envelope "Hurricane Sandy Donation" and return to homeroom teacher.
• Parents can help in the classroom on Thursday November 15th by facilitating the hat/scarf service activity. To be a facilitator, email Mary Galvez (magalvez@tampabay.rr.com). 
• Help prepare materials for the service project by coming to Jennifer Pope's home (814 S Willow Ave) on Tuesday, November 13th, from 10am- 12pm. Anyone interested in cutting and sewing fleece is welcome.

Having been in a hurricane's path, our community can sympathize with those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Let's show we care with 100% participation on November 15th!

Walk-A-Thon

Wow! The Walk-A-Thon was a great success. With the help of our wonderful students and families, Gorrie CRUSHED our goal of $25,000 by raising over $30,000 this year! The monies raised with go towards making Gorrie an even more amazing school than it already is! I wanted to give a special thanks to Melissa Borchard for organizing the event and putting hours and hours of her time in to making it a great day! Also, Cynthia Heil and Pat Ashby for taking time out of their schedules to come in and create our class banner with the kids. Pat also helped get our Little Buddies banner put together as well. I really appreciate our help and support throughout the year!
The weather held up and the kids had a very nice day. Here are some of the pictures I was able to snap.

Getting Antsy....

I am soooo ready to get my class put together for next year. I think I have compiled all of my materials and I just can't wait to get into the classroom to pull the whole thing together. Over the past few days, I have been traveling throughout Tampa to find some great deals on Patriotic themed materials. I went from store to store and found some really AWESOME classroom supplies. I wish I could go up to school tomorrow and have the whole classroom setup for next year. I find myself thinking about next year every free second I have throughout the day. I have so many ideas that I am sure I will forget some of them! I have even begun making a running list of ideas whenever they pop into my head, in hopes that I can remember them all. Next year can't come soon enough. Correction, I would like to enjoy summer! But once it's over, I am ready to get back into another great year at Gorrie!
